The most vital element on earth is oxygen. Without it, human life simply could not exist. That's because about 90 percent of the body's life energy is created by oxygen. All functions of the body are regulated by oxygen - even our most basic abilities to think, feel and act. OXYGEN - the element of life.

Consider the fact that four basic components which generate and maintain life processes are proteins, carbohydrates, water and energy. Oxygenation and oxidation

Through the automatic process of breathing, the human body oxygenates itself. Oxygen is picked up by the hemoglobin in the blood circulating in the tiny alveoli sacs in the lungs and distributed to all of the body's seven trillion cells where, among other things, it is then used for another vital process called oxidation.

Oxidation occurs at the cellular level of the body. It is a part of that vital and complex process by which the body chemically converts nutrients into energy and by which the body rids itself of toxins and other waste. Oxidation is key to proper metabolic function, correct circulation, assimilation, digestion, and elimination. It helps purify the blood, keeping it free from cellular waste build-up. Leading researchers are learning that much of the tidal wave of illness and disease mankind is experiencing is triggered by oxygen deficiency in both the human body and it the environment. Researcher John Muntz, Ph.D., points out that there are many ways people become oxygen deficient. Over time, each way leads directly to illness and disease. Worse yet, most people, he says, suffer without ever realizing the likely underlying cause of their chronic ill health symptoms.

Even relatively healthy people have trouble extracting all of the oxygen they need from the air. This is not because of breathing problems but the air itself is becoming more and more oxygen depleted.

Civilization's combined technologies consume nearly 20 times the amount of oxygen that would normally be extracted by 5 billion breathing humans. Combustion of carbon and hydrocarbon fuels, bonds up tremendous amounts of free oxygen into carbon dioxide (CO2) and incomplete combustion ties up still more into carbon monoxide (CO). Diet is also an important factor in causing oxygen deficiency in the human body. Few people realize that "junk food" is low in oxygen content and that eating junk foods forces the body to use up more of its oxygen reserves than usual in order to oxidize the preservatives and metabolize what few nutrients may be left. On the other hand, complex carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, and nuts are very high in oxygen. More than 50 percent of the weight of these foods are made up of oxygen. By comparison, the percentage of oxygen in fats is less than 15 percent and in protein between 20 and 40 percent. Other oxygen - robbing foods include processed sugar, white flour, alcohol, and caffeine - loaded drinks such as coffee and colas. Stress further robs the body of its much-needed oxygen. Stress due to chemical toxicity from physical over-exertion leads to a reduction in oxygen as the body attempts to detoxify itself by oxidizing accumulated toxins. Emotional stress draws down the body's oxygen reserves to produce more adrenaline and adrenaline-related hormones as required. Stress caused by excess acidity causes the body to use extra oxygen as it tries to neutralize excess acidity.

Oxygen deficiency and disease

Doctors now believe the symptoms of chronic oxygen deficiencies in the human body begin initially with overall body weakness, fatigue, and infection. Glucose molecules (from complex carbohydrates) in the cell are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Glucose is the "FUEL" for the cells' energy production. Oxygen (O2) is necessary for the aerobic combustion of glucose in each cell. As the glucose fuel is "burned" the cells create adenosine triphosphate (ATP) the source of power for all cell, organ and body functions. This is a naturally occurring process. During the burning of the glucose and the formation of ATP, free radicals are naturally created. The body is designed to diffuse and eliminate these free radicals with anti-oxidants, such as vitamins A, C, E, various members of the B-complex, beta-carotene, the entire spectrum of bio-flavonoids, and other naturally-occurring phytochemicals in food.

If the body does not have a sufficient supply of oxygen at the cellular level, the cells will ferment the glucose molecules (anaerobic) energy rather than burn them (aerobic). Once the cells revert to this anaerobic process they no longer perform the funtcions they were designed for and are considered to be unhealthy.

If the body does not get a sufficient supply of oxygen, the body will not be able to utilize the anti-oxidants efficiently. Therefore, when ATP is not sufficiently available, a less efficient (fermentation) means of creating energy occurs.
